At Queen’s University, Belfast we have a portfolio of qualifying law degrees (QLD) each tailored to suit the needs of individual applicants. The degrees vary in duration, intensity and level. We are happy to advise applicants as to which degree pathway is most suitable for them.
All of our graduate QLDs provide students with first class legal education in a School with an international reputation for excellence. A QLD from Queen’s University prepares students for the global and international environments in which they will be providing legal advice.
- LLB Senior Status
- Juris Doctor
The Juris Doctor (JD) is a professional doctorate programme blending taught, skills-based and research elements. This is a three-year QLD for Northern Ireland, England and Wales. This degree is also recognised by various international jurisdictions – please see Accreditation section. It is taught via intensive seminar teaching with each student encouraged to participate fully and engage with the subjects.
In Year 1, the programme will focus on most of the core subjects required for a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD). In Year 2, the doctoral research-focused will allow students to develop a depth of knowledge and originality of insight in core legal subjects. Year 3 is reserved for a 30,000 thesis under expert supervision, whereby students will demonstrate originality of thought, through the production of new knowledge or through novel applications of existing knowledge. The thesis will be subject to examination in a viva voce.
- Masters In Law
The Masters in Law (MLaw) is a two-year full-time postgraduate QLD for Northern Ireland, England and Wales.

Queen’s has one of the most modern campuses in the UK, including the award winning McClay Library, one of the finest libraries in the world and home to 1.2 million volumes and over 2,000 reader places.

Queen’s is a great university campus. There’s lots of good food places within walking distance. Belfast is a fantastic city with so much history to learn about and see. It’s cheaper to live here than it is in to live in London. Europe is so accessible from here, I can fly to Paris for £30. I have been to over 10 countries in Europe since I came here. Matthew
