Spotlight on Law Tour

Spotlight in Law Tour
Spotlight on Law Tour
Organised by the Careers, Employability and Skills Department in collaboration with our School of Law

At Queen's University Belfast School of Law, we are committed to equipping our students with the skills, insights, and connections needed to excel in the legal profession. Our annual Spotlight on Law Belfast City Tour offers an unparalleled opportunity for students to engage directly with leading legal professionals and top law firms in Belfast. Held on 21st and 22nd May 2025, this two-day event provided a dynamic platform for students to explore diverse legal career paths and gain hands-on experience in the field.

Day 1: Immersive Insights into Legal Practice

The tour kicked off at the Law Society of Northern Ireland, where students gained a behind-the-scenes look at private practice. A panel of high-street firm experts, led by Claire McNamee from the Law Society, shared candid insights into areas such as matrimonial law, criminal law, and conveyancing. Their real-world perspectives highlighted the rewarding impact of supporting clients daily, setting an inspiring tone for the tour.

Next, students visited Tughans, one of Belfast's leading full-service law firms, renowned for its expertise in corporate and property transactions. The session began with a company overview, followed by an engaging exploration of Planning & Environmental Law. Through real-life case studies, students saw how legal expertise shapes communities and the environment.

Day one concluded at TLT LLP, a powerhouse commercial law firm serving all UK jurisdictions. Students delved into the importance of Commercial Awareness through expert-led discussions and a hands-on case study session that honed their strategic thinking. They also received a presentation from staff emphasising the value of ongoing learning in supporting their professional development.

Day 2: Building Skills and Connections

The second day began at A&L Goodbody, where students immersed themselves in the fast-paced world of commercial law. They participated in two dynamic workshops—one on Commercial Awareness and another on Negotiation—designed to build critical skills for today's legal landscape. The session also fielded some excellent questions from our students, who had a chance to speak directly to early-career legal professionals.

The tour continued at Cleaver Fulton Rankin, one of Northern Ireland's top commercial law firms.  The Managing Director and his team provided an inside look at the firm's operations and shared what they seek in graduate talent. A role-play mediation exercise led by a firm Director then offered students practical experience, giving them an excellent insight into a key and growing field of legal practice.

Closing in Style: Panel Event and Networking

The tour wrapped up with a dynamic Panel Event and Networking Session at One Elmwood, Queen's University Belfast. Students heard firsthand from an impressive lineup of legal professionals, including Elizabeth Buchanan (A&O Shearman), David Black (Arthur Cox), Natalia Kozik (Baker McKenzie), Dawson McConkey (Carson McDowell), and Laura Gillespie (Pinsent Masons). The panel shared their career journeys and offered insider tips on thriving in the legal profession, providing inspiration and practical advice.

One of our students, Muhammad Rehman, who attended the tour, gave the following testimony of the two days: “The Spotlight on Law City Tour 2025 was an incredible opportunity to engage with leading legal professionals and gain firsthand exposure to diverse practice areas, from criminal and environmental law to commercial awareness and negotiation. Over two days, I got to explore the realities of high street and corporate legal practices, participated in mock mediation and sharpened essential legal skills through interactive workshops and panels. The tour gave me clarity about the legal paths open to me and reinforced my belief that legal learning thrives through curiosity, conversation and connection. I am deeply grateful to the School of Law and Careers, Employability and Skills team for facilitating such a meaningful opportunity.”
