Celebrating Excellence: Dr Jocelyn Bosse Awarded Prestigious UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship

19 September, 2025

The fellowship represents a major investment in world-leading research, with a full economic cost exceeding £1 million over the next four years.

We are thrilled to announce that Dr Jocelyn Bosse has been awarded a highly prestigious UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, a remarkable recognition of her groundbreaking research and leadership potential. This award, part of a £120 million investment by UKRI to support the next generation of research and innovation leaders, marks a significant milestone in Dr Bosse’s academic journey and a proud moment for the School.

Dr Bosse's project, entitled "A Century of Propertising Plants: Examining the Role of Intellectual Property Law in Protecting Biodiversity and Food Security," will address critical and timely issues at the intersection of intellectual property law, global food security, and biodiversity conservation. This ambitious empirical research aims to tackle complex challenges surrounding plant variety rights and their implications for sustainable futures.

The fellowship represents a major investment in world-leading research, with a full economic cost exceeding £1 million over the next four years. The project will be co-led by Dr Susannah Chapman (University College Cork), with Professor Louise Mallinder providing institutional mentorship from Queen's University Belfast.

Dr Bosse commented, “It is a great honour to receive this award, which provides the means to investigate difficult questions about the impact of plant intellectual property rights on food security and biodiversity conservation. With this research, I aim to make an important contribution to current debates about the legal protections for plant varieties around the world. I can't wait to build my team and dig into this project together."

Dr Bosse has expressed deep gratitude to the many colleagues across the School, the AHSS Faculty, and the wider University who supported her throughout the rigorous application process. This institutional effort was instrumental in securing the Fellowship.

Head of School, Professor Warren Barr commented, "This is a major achievement for Joecelyn personally and yet another example of both the incredible quality of our research staff and the vibrant, supportive research culture in the School of Law at Queen's University Belfast."

Please join us in congratulating Dr Jocelyn Bosse on this outstanding achievement. Her work promises to make a lasting impact on global conversations and ongoing legal debates about biodiversity, intellectual property, and food security.
