QUB School of Law achieves Athena Swan Silver Award for Commitment to Gender Equality

"This is a wonderful achievement. We are very proud that the School's commitment to gender equality has received this recognition." Professor Joan Loughrey

Head of School, Professor Joan Loughrey with Athena Swan Champion, Professor Aoife O'Donoghue

We are delighted to announce that the Law School has been awarded the Athena Swan Silver Award, recognising its outstanding commitment to advancing gender equality in higher education. This significant achievement reflects the Law School's dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all its students and staff.

The Athena Swan Charter, established by Advance HE, aims to promote and recognise gender equality and diversity in higher education and research institutions worldwide. The Silver Award specifically acknowledges Schools that have demonstrated a significant impact and sustained commitment to addressing gender equality issues.

Head of School, Professor Joan Loughrey, commented, "This is a wonderful achievement. We are very proud that the School's commitment to gender equality has received this recognition. This has been made possible by the efforts of colleagues right across the School. I want in particular to acknowledge and thank our current Swan Champion, Professor Aoife O'Donoghue, for her leadership on the application and the work that led up to it, to her predecessor Swan Champions, the Swan committee and the Queen's University Belfast Gender Initiative for their guidance and support. I am absolutely delighted for the School and my colleagues, and we are committed to continuing our work in this space."

The School of Law has actively worked towards creating a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion within its academic community. The Silver Award is a testament to the School's ongoing efforts to implement policies and initiatives that promote gender balance and address barriers faced by underrepresented groups.

Some key initiatives and achievements contributing to the Athena SWAN Silver Award include:

  1. Promoting Diversity in Leadership: The School has implemented measures to increase the representation of women in leadership roles, fostering an environment that encourages diverse perspectives and experiences.
  2. Supporting Career Development: The Law School has developed and enhanced career development programs to provide equitable opportunities for all members of our community.
  3. Creating an Inclusive Culture: The Law has implemented policies and practices that foster an inclusive culture amongst our staff and students, ensuring everyone feels valued and supported in their work and study.

Professor Aoife O'Donoghue, the Athena Swan Champion, stated, "This is a validation of the School's ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse academic community. We are proud of the progress we have made, and this achievement encourages us to continue our efforts to create a supportive environment for everyone within our Law School."

AHSS Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Nola Hewitt-Dundas reflected on the achievement, "I am delighted that the School of Law has been successful in securing a Silver Athena Swan Award. Much work has been undertaken, over many years, to embed the principles of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. I congratulate everyone involved in this achievement and I commend all colleagues who strive to build a culture where everyone is valued, respected and has the opportunity to excel.  Again, my sincere congratulations to all!"
