From the Crown Court to the police station, law students from Queen’s University Belfast stepped out of the lecture room and into the courtroom during our first-ever Criminal Work Shadowing Week, held from 2nd to 6th June 2025. This unique initiative, supported by the Public Prosecution Service and led by Rob Croskery (Lecturer and Practice Fellow) and Deirdre Timoney (Employability and Placement Officer) offered students an immersive, behind-the-scenes experience of the criminal justice system in action.
Thank you for these words from one of our participating students, Sophie Crumlin, who summed up the impact of this initiative:
"This week, I had the privilege of taking part in the inaugural ‘Criminal Law Shadowing Week’ with QUB's School of Law and the Public Prosecution Service. The week began with sessions from members of the Public Prosecution Service, who shared information on the important role that they play within the criminal justice system. Hearing from leading barristers and solicitors who have worked on landmark cases in Northern Ireland's legal history was very inspiring.
I spent the rest of the week shadowing legal professionals in both the Crown Court and the Magistrates' Court. Spending my first two days observing a Crown Court trial unfold, alongside an incredible barrister David McNeill, which proved to be a standout moment.
We also had the chance to hear from Presiding District Judge Keown and the Recorder of Belfast, Her Honour Judge Smyth, about their legal careers. Their reflections strengthened my motivation to pursue a legal career.
I am so grateful to everyone who made this experience possible. I would like to extend my thanks to Rob Croskery and Deirdre Timoney for their organisation and support throughout the week. I would also like to thank all of the legal professionals, including Barrister David McNeill, whom I had the opportunity to shadow and engage with."
Sophie’s experience is just one example of the real-world insight and inspiration this initiative delivered. We are proud to have launched such a meaningful opportunity for our aspiring legal professionals. This inaugural scheme marks a milestone for the School of Law — one that reflects our commitment to practical, career-focused learning and the strength of our connections within the legal community.
