Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, ‘Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine’ [1989] University of Chicago Legal Forum 139

Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, ‘Mapping the Margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence Against Women of Color’ (1991) 43 Stanford law review 1241

Intersectional feminism is a topical issue and one about which there many misconceptions on social media. Crenshaw’s writings help clarify the theory of intersectional feminism and assist in developing critical understanding of the theory. To follow up on Crenshaw’s work the film ‘Hidden Figures’ is highly recommended.

Hidden Figures - This film tells the true account of black female mathematicians who held essential roles at NASA during the ‘space race’ years.  A key quote from the film is ‘We go from being our father’s daughters to our husband’s wives to our children’s mothers’. Themes include race, gender, feminism, oppression, cultural change, equality.

Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, ‘The Urgency of Intersectionality’, TED YouTube Channel Inspirational talk given by Crenshaw. Themes of intersectionality, feminism, race, violence, politics, civil rights, social justice.

Law School further recommends

Kalwant Bhopal: White Privilege: The Myth of a Post-Racial Society - This book is a timely reminder that society must address white privilege and the disadvantages this perpetuates. Themes include race, discrimination, feminism, civil rights, human rights, economics, social science.
