Research and Innovation Clusters report published by The Royal Society
The Royal Society has today (16th Sept 2020) published their ‘Research and innovation clusters’ report.
The report features 8 global case studies, including a case study on the Belfast Technology sector. ECIT and its Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT) are highlighted as major contributors to the successful development of this sector.
The report explains how the Belfast technology cluster has emerged over the past twenty years with considerable support from European, UK and regional government and local universities. While the knowledge economy in Northern Ireland remains small, the emerging cluster has contributed to its growth. It benefits from a core research competency, a highly skilled research base and sustained public support.

Prof Máire O’Neill, ECIT Director, commented: “It is excellent to have our hard work in developing the Belfast Technology sector recognised in this report by The Royal Society. The work of ECIT, CSIT and Queen’s University Belfast, alongside the other organisations mentioned within this report, has been paramount in bringing innovative ideas to this sector.”
