Established in 1845, UCC is one of the premier research institutions in Ireland. The institution is ranked in the top 2% of universities worldwide based on the quality of its research outputs and peer esteem indicators, and was the first university to be named The Sunday Times University of the Year for two consecutive years 2016 and 2017. UCC was ranked in the top 100 Reuters Ranking of innovative universities 2017.
As of September 2017, UCC researchers have secured 98 Horizon 2020 awards (32 as coordinator and 65 as partner) The total financial drawdown amounts to €50.5 million.
In 2013, UCC gained the HR Excellence in Research Award in recognition of the University’s on-going commitment to adopting the principles of The European Charter for Researchers and a Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. UCC became the third university in Ireland to receive the Bronze Athena SWAN award in August 2016, recognising its efforts to promote gender equality in higher education. UCC was the world’s first university to be awarded the Green Campus and Green Flag from the Foundation of Environmental Education. Since 2016 the University has offered a multidisciplinary course in Sustainability UW00005 which introduces students to sustainability issues.
