Celebrating Inclusion and Imagination: Launch of 'Vitamin Sea for Everyone' at Mae Murray Foundation
On Monday 24 November, Mae Murray Foundation hosted the launch of Vitamin Sea for Everyone, a new children’s book developed in partnership with the Nerve Centre and informed by research at Queen’s University Belfast as part of the GroundsWell consortium. The event brought together children, educators, researchers, and community partners to recognise the importance of inclusive outdoor spaces for health and wellbeing.
Pupils from Roddensvale School in Larne joined us for the occasion and were treated to a book reading and magic show from Fizz Whizz Pop. Their energy and enthusiasm captured the very spirit of the story - the belief that every child should be able to experience the benefits of the outdoors.
We were delighted to have illustrator Deirdre Gribbin, the Nerve Centre’s Rachel McDermott, and members of our research team present to share insights into the creative and collaborative process behind the book. The story draws directly from research exploring how accessible and inclusive blue spaces can support children’s physical activity, social connection, and overall wellbeing (link to reports).
Kyleigh Lough, CEO of Mae Murray Foundation, shared:
“We are delighted that the importance of Inclusive Beaches and transforming blue spaces so that they are inclusive for all, is highlighted in this beautiful children’s book. This story explains how everyone of all abilities should have the opportunity to access and have fun at the beach, something that many of us take for granted. We are very grateful for the team at the GroundsWell consortium and the Nerve Centre for creating this important story book.”
Vitamin Sea for Everyone follows four adventurous cats, including Mae, who uses a wheelchair, as they discover Mae Murray Foundation’s Inclusive Beach Programme. Through adapted surfing, paddleboarding, and opportunities to simply enjoy the sand and sea together, the book highlights what is possible when environments are designed with inclusion at their heart.
The launch event served as a powerful reminder of the impact that accessible spaces, and the partnerships that make them possible, can have on children and families. It was inspiring to see research translated into a story that resonates so strongly with young readers and encourages a future where every child can participate fully in outdoor experiences.
