Biometric Residence Permits expiring 31 December 2024

Calendar with red pins

Students who have immigration permission to stay in the UK after 31 December 2024 and who have been issued with a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card may have noticed the expiry date on their BRP card is 31 December 2024.

From 01 January 2025, UK visa holders will no longer use a BRP card to prove their immigration status and instead can prove their immigration permission online.  If your BRP Card has an expiry date of 31 December 2024, this is not an error; you will no longer need a BRP card to prove your immigration permission after this date.  To confirm the dates of your current UK immigration permission, you can check your visa decision email if you applied in the UK, or your visa decision letter if you applied outside the UK.

There is no action that you need to take if your BRP Card has an expiry date of 31 December 2024.   We will update our webpages with further information when UKVI release guidance about how UK visa holders can prove their immigration status after 01 January 2025.

For further information, please visit our Biometric Residence Permit webpage and UKVI's website.
