This session, with an intended audeince of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers working within any STEM area, will be chaired by Dr Mark Muldoon (Director of Postgraduate Research in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering). Dr Muldoon will be joined by a range of speakers, all of whom will be able to provide candid advice and valuable insights into industrial and academic career pathways. The overall session consists of two sub-sessions, featuring the following speakers:

Industrial Career Paths (14:00 - 15:00):

  • Belinda Byrne, PhD. - Medical Director at AbbVie
  • Niall McCreanor, PhD. - Lead Technical Outsourcing Manager - Associate Principal Scientist at AstraZeneca

During this sub-session, speakers will discuss their own career paths, and consider the transferable skills they believe are important for securing employment within industrial sectors, and making career progression within a large corporation.

Academic Career Paths (15:00 - 16:00):

  • Leila Moura, PhD. - Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Queen’s University Belfast
  • Tom Gibson, PhD. - Research Development Officer at Queen's University Belfast

This sub-session will focus on fellowships, which are are now one of the major routes into a career in academia. Dr Moura will discuss how she obtained a prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship, while Dr Gibson will give an overview of the different fellowship schemes that exist, and discuss how Queen’s can support applications to these schemes. This discussion will also more broadly cover pathways to academic Lectureships.

Each sub-session will also provide attendees with an opportunity to ask questions to the panel, further assisting with their career development.

Please note that this event is not subject specific, and will be widely applicable to researchers in all STEM subjects.
