Postgraduate Employability, Careers Guidance and Support

The Thomas J. Moran Graduate School offers a range of opportunities for students to develop their future-readiness and manage their own careers whether that is into further academia, non-academic employment or self-employment.

Postgraduate Research
  • 1-2-1 Careers Appointments for PGR/PhDs

    Our Employability and Careers Consultant, Diane Masson, offers 1-2-1 appointments to discuss all areas of career planning as well as offering individual feedback on your CV.

    Please click on 'Book an Appointment' in MyFuture and choose Graduate School from the drop-down list. By dragging your cursur over each appointment listing, you can see topics that will be covered and decide which option is most appropriate for you. Please click the box beside each appointment to see current availability and to book.

    1-2-1 appointments can take place via Microsoft Teams or in person in the Graduate School. After booking your appointment you will receive confirmation from your consultant on how the appointment will take place. If you have any difficulty booking your appointment, please email pg.skills@qub.ac.uk .

  • Employability Workshops for PGRs

    The Thomas J. Moran Graduate School also offers a range of employability workshops to support postgraduate researchers with the next step in their career, whether academic or non-academic.

    These workshops include:

    • Effective Job Search and Career Planning
    • How to Write Your CV and Cover Letter for Academic Jobs
    • How to Write Your CV and Cover Letter for Non - Academic Jobs
    • How to Prepare for Competency Based Applications and Interviews
    • How to prepare for Interviews for Academic Jobs

    These workshops can be booked via MyFuture.

  • Your PhD... What's Next?

    Embarking on a PhD journey is just the beginning.

    To thrive in your chosen career path, it is vital to gain clarity on your goals and develop a strategic plan. During this 4 day programme, you will explore key aspects of career development and equip yourself with the necessary tools to navigate the ever-evolving job market, both within academia and beyond.

    • Day One - Define your Career Anchors
    • Day Two - Master Self-Marketing
    • Day Three - Communicating your Research
    • Day Four - Cultivating Career Resilience

    Take charge of your career and embark on a journey of growth and fulfillment. You can book onto this programme via MyFuture.

    Attend all four days to complete the programme and you will be eligible for the Future Ready Award.

Postgraduate Taught

  • Master Your Leadership

    The Master Your Leadership programme helps postgraduate taught (Masters, PDip, PCert) students develop and enhance their personal skills and grow their networks in a rapidly changing world. Leadership in this new virtual world is about promoting collaboration and motivating yourself and others.

  • Master Your Employability

    Enhance your skills through our employability programme for master’s students.

    During this employability programme, you will:

    • Learn key considerations for job applications, including successful CVs, competency-based questions and interviews
    • Develop your online presence through LinkedIn
    • Take part in a group exercise to practise your communication and decision-making skills
    • Have the opportunity to complete Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) questionnaire, which determines your different strengths

    Dates will be advertised under Events on MyFuture. Please note this is recognised as one of the activities under the combined route for Future Ready Award.
