School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Holds Annual Christmas Quiz
Staff and students from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen's have taken part in the annual Green Impact Christmas Quiz, in support of Friends of the Cancer Centre Northern Ireland.
This yearly event, supported by funding obtained from Queen's University's Green Fund, provided an opportunity for staff and students within the School to socialise with one another, whilst also learning more about energy-saving strategies which could be employed both during the Christmas break, and over the course of the year, in order to reduce energy use, and enhance sustainability.
A large number of teams entered the quiz, with a team consisting of staff from the Bryden Centre, and School educational staff, being declared the winners.
Fiona Blakley, Green Impact Coordinator for the School, commented:
"The Green Impact Christmas Quiz always provides a great opportunity for staff and students to work together in a more social way, whilst at the same time allowing us to promote green and sustainable practices within the School, particularly on the run up to extended University holidays, where simple actions like switching off non-essential equipment can reduce our carbon footprint, and energy costs.
We're indebted to the University's Green Fund, who provided financial support for the operation of this event, which is a key part of the School's Green Impact calendar.
The event also raised a substantial amount of money for the School's Green Impact charity partner, Friends of the Cancer Centre, and we hope that this donation will go further to assist the excellent work done by the team there."
Dr Kevin Morgan, who organised the event added:
"I want to firstly thank the Green Impact Team who all played their part in organising this event. This was a great opportunity to put a focus on QUB's new "Climate-Friendly Shutdown" campaign by encouraging staff and students to play their part with key aspects highlighted in between the Rounds of questions. This was my first time organising the quiz and I put a focus on having "Green" as part of each question, whether in literature, music or geography as well as having a dedicated round of questions based on QUB's Energy and Carbon Management Plan. So hopefully all of our participants are a little more informed and left the event feeling Green, and not just from envy of the winners!"
