Queens University hosts 19th Annual Sir Bernard Crossland Symposium & Postgraduate Workshop

5 May, 2016
Sir Bernard Crossland

The Symposium programme, hosted on the 27th &28th April 2016, included oral paper presentations from PhD students from academic institutions all over Ireland.  Prizes were funded by a bequest from Sir Bernard and administered by Engineers Ireland, which were awarded for the best presentations, based on technical merit and presentation skills.

The Symposium pays tribute to Sir Bernard’s great interest in education and research in Mechanical Engineering and, in particular, recognition of the critical importance of design and manufacture in engineering practice.

This year’s event was extremely successful with very high standards evident across all of the participating researchers.

Congratulations go to all of the winners! They were:

Posters (prizes sponsored by SMAE)
1st Joseph Thompson (UCD), Wave-based Control of Spacecraft and Rockets
2nd Orla McGee (NUIG), Computational Characterization of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Positioning
3rd Ellen Cahill (UCD), Manufacturing of Porous 316L Microneedles

Papers (Prizes sponsored by Engineers Ireland)
1st Kain F. Eichholz, UL, Design and Manufacture of an Innovative Biofabrication Method for 3D Tissue Engineering Constructs
2nd David McKelvey, QUB, Thermo-mechanical Modelling of Semi-crystalline Polymers
3rd Eóin McEvoy, NUIG, A Multi-Scale Framework for the Remodelling of Cardiac Cells and Tissue,
