Design and Simulation

Mesh of jet engine
Our Research
Design and Simulation
Advanced Computer Aided Engineering

Exploring novel numerical simulation methods to enable the development of higher performing engineering products and more efficient design and production processes.  Our research encompasses multidisciplinary simulation capabilities across engineering design, analysis, manufacture and systems modelling themes.

Exemplar Research
Engine finite element mesh
Finite Element Modelling

The development of algorithms for transforming detailed geometric models into idealised forms suitable for finite element analysis.

The long term goal is automatic, adaptive analysis, based on design geometry but using analysis models of appropriate complexity.

Finite Element Modelling Research Group
Student with virtual reality equipment
Immersive Virtual Reality

Virtual test environments to support learning at the earliest possible opportunity in the product development cycle.

Knowledge acquisition, assembly analysis and process development using wholly virtual assets.

Simulation of worker assembling a part
Digital manufacture and assembly

Multi-level assembly system modelling

Capturing manufacture and assembly processes from individual part through to full factory simulations

Simulated rivet manufacture process diagram
Process Modelling

Improving manufacturing precision and efficiency through process simulation

Development of virtual machining, moulding, forming, welding and drilling process models

Simulated structural test results
Virtual structural testing and design

Accurate prediction of material and structural behaviour

Generation and integration of predictive material and structural analysis models for improved product performance and reduced development time

Molecular dynamics simulation of hard metal machining
Multiscale and Multiphysics Modelling

Capturing the complexities of multi-scale and multi-physical interaction

Simulating from molecular level through to full scale product beahviour, including complex multiphysics phenomena such as lightning strike
