Advancing Engineering Education
To be global leaders in engineering education, equipping future engineers with the skills and mindset to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Importance
We will enhance engineering education through rigorous research into teaching and learning that empowers educators and students alike. By fostering innovation, collaboration and evidence-based practice, we aim to create a lasting impact both locally and globally.
Exploring innovative assessment practices – formative, continuous, and peer-based – to enhance learning and address diversity in student cohorts.
Designing and evaluating project-based, design-build-test activities, laboratory work, and group projects that mirror real-world engineering practice.
Developing integrated curricula and exploring processes for curriculum reform, change management, and implementation at scale.
Applying and advancing CDIO methodology and standards, including their role in programme design and the development of collaborative learning spaces.
Investigating approaches to developing leadership skills and professional capabilities for complex engineering contexts.
Investigating effective approaches to teaching and assessing mathematics for engineers, including formative and continuous assessment strategies.
Examining the role of peer-assisted learning, online communities, and student societies in supporting transition, engagement, and inclusion.
Overview
Our research explores how engineering education can be designed to develop both technical expertise and professional capability. We investigate the teaching and assessment of engineering mathematics, the creation of authentic learning experiences through projects, design–build activities, laboratories, and group work, and the design and implementation of integrated curricula.
Our work engages with the CDIO framework and its role in curriculum reform, while also examining assessment practices, student-centred learning, and the contribution of student communities to engagement and belonging. We additionally explore approaches to engineering leadership development to prepare graduates for complex professional contexts.
