EEE students showcased projects at the Megaw Lecture 2026, with support from industry partners
On April 13, the Ashby Building's Sir Bernard Crossland Lecture Theatre buzzed with excitement as final-year EEE students showcased their work at the Megaw Lecture and Prize Ceremony, sponsored by the IET.
This event commemorates the legacy of Eric Christopher Stanley Megaw MBE (1908 – 1956), a distinguished Queen's University graduate renowned for his pioneering work on the cavity magnetron during World War II.
Eric Megaw's early passion for wireless communication was evident when, at just 15, he made headlines for establishing the first amateur wireless communication between Ireland and Australia. This remarkable achievement was highlighted in the Belfast Telegraph on September 14, 1925, marking the beginning of a storied career in engineering and innovation. Megaw exchanged greetings with Mr. W. Howden of Box Hill, near Melbourne, maintaining communication for 10 minutes.
This year's event featured presentations from talented speakers Ben Henderson, Ben Sloan, Kenneth Obanor, Nia Mallon, Yara Albacha and Zhenghao Duan. Their projects were evaluated by a panel of esteemed judges, including Mark O'Flaherty from BT Digital Data & AI, Paul McGrotty from Xirgo Technologies, and Dr. David Laverty, Queen’s University Belfast.
After careful deliberation, Ben Sloan was awarded first place, with Kenneth Obanor as the runner-up.

This event was facilitated by Hien Quoc Ngo and Mohammadali Mohammadi. The Megaw Lecture aims to provide a platform for final-year EEE students to present their projects, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and professional development.
The Megaw Lecture showcased a diverse range of innovative projects and ideas from our final-year students. The student presenters received constructive feedback from the expert judges, which helped them refine their technical and presentation skills.
