Fun at the Girls into Electronics Event

21 June, 2024

35 girls from 5 schools attended the Girls into Electronics Event from the Royal School Dungannon, Dominican College, Portstewart, Dalriada Ballymoney and St Dominic's Belfast and Scared Heart Grammar School School.

We kickstarted the event with an introduction from Jiyu Fang from Apple who sponsored this event.  

Dr Ciara Rafferty from Queen's University represented the UK Electronics Skills Foundation who organised and promoted this amazing opportunity for girls to engage with technology using electronics.

Then the girls were split into groups to sample 3 different activities.  Kabirat Olayemi, a Ph.D. researcher  led the Tello drone flying session within the net in the robotics lab in the Ashby building.

Then a soldering session was lead by Alex Barnes, an undergraduate who has a key role in facilitating practical maker sessions and 3D printing in the QLab in the CSB with Jon Bustard.

Then Michael Cregan took some of the group on a tour of the power and electrical labs.

After lunch which was pizza Ose Igene led a session with the exciting Robomaster robots using vision markers with the assistance of Salman Ahmad.

Then we had a panel discussion with questions from the students in the audience.  Chloe Thompson was beamed in from Lego and from Vidyashree Padole from  AMD attended to discuss the challenges and opportunities for woman in the engineering field.

 

Everyone was given a certificate at the end and a Grove Beginners Arduino kit to take home.
