Launch of Green Dot Bystander Training
Queen's University Belfast supported by the Ulster University kick off an evidence-based program to combat sexual violence and harassment on campus.
Students and staff at Queen's University Belfast recently participated in the first session of Green Dot QUB, an evidence-based bystander intervention program designed with the University of Ulster to prevent sexual violence, harassment, and domestic abuse within the university communityLed by Dr Esha Barlaskar and Dr Fiona North, the first session provided an introduction to this important program, exploring how the term "bystander" came about and what bystander intervention means—recognising negative situations and responding in ways that can stop or de-escalate harmful behaviour.
Participants explored the sexual violence pyramid, which shows how tolerance of behaviours at the bottom can enable more serious harms. An interactive quiz challenged myths about sexual violence and confronted victim-blaming attitudes. The training then introduced the 3 D's of Bystander Intervention—Direct, Distract, and Delegate. Participants worked in groups on real-life scenarios, imagining how they might respond.
The session was well received by participants, who reported feeling more confident and equipped with practical tools to intervene safely in difficult situations. Creating a safer, happier university experience is something we all play a part in. By learning these simple but effective intervention techniques, every member of the university community can help make our campuses places where everyone feels safe and respected. The program aims to build a culture of safer, healthier relationships across the university, where everyone looks out for one another.
Everyone who attends the training will receive a Green Dot badge, and we aim to create a sea of green dots across the university—a visible network of allies who challenge inappropriate behaviour and support others to do the same.
