Peer Mentors Meet Impact Training

29 January, 2025

Two QUB Peer Mentors, Daniel Innis and Steven Trouton, both current Computer Science students at Queen’s University Belfast, led a practical Computer Science course for students aged 14–16 from Boys Model and Girls Model Secondary Schools.

🎉 Congratulations to the students who successfully completed the 10-week programme, despite external school commitments!  The Peer Mentors were impressed with the students’ enthusiasm, noting how they built a strong rapport and engaged deeply with the subject.

💬 " When I was first starting out in CS I found it so vast that it was really difficult to even know where to begin With this class we wanted to offer a few different starting positions, from backend Python development, to designing webpages with Javascript, so that hopefully everyone could engage with the course and explore the world of CS on their own terms. I'm so glad everyone managed to find a way to engage with the course and I really hope we managed to spark a few new passions for software."
— Daniel Innis, QUB Peer Mentor

This year’s programme featured a balanced mix of participants, reflecting our commitment to increasing diversity in STEM including 4 female students and 6 male students.  Encouraging young women to engage in Computer Science is vital, and we were delighted to see them actively participating alongside their male peers.

A huge thank you to everyone involved for making this programme a success! 🎉

This programme was funded by EEECS at Queen’s University Belfast and organised by Dr. David Cutting (EEECS) and Ms. Lesa McKee (Impact Training). Their dedication, along with the work of the QUB Peer Mentors, has helped bridge the digital skills gap and inspire the next generation of coders in Northern Ireland.
