EEECS Hosts First Ever XP Work Experience Programme

8 July, 2024

The School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was delighted to run the first-ever XP Work Experience Programme, hosting 24 lower sixth students from 15 schools across Northern Ireland.

The work experience students took part in a range of exciting activities from eSports to Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing to Electronics and VR/AR.

It’s a new approach to the traditional work experience model, where students had the opportunity to try lots of exciting activities within the tech sector, delivered by academics and professionals in the school of EEECS. They then worked within their own 4 student groups to conceive, design, and pitch an idea as part of the XP finale hackathon, using the ideas and experiences they have completed to approach one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The presentations were dynamic and exciting, with topics ranging from ocean cleanup to, healthy eating and cleaning up vehicle emissions. All of the teams did a fantastic job, but we had 3 prizes for teams that went the extra mile.

Most Innovative Project - Green Future

  • Egan Maguire
  • Cerys Cranston
  • Cody Livingstone
  • Anthony McConville

Best Researched Project - Emission Regen

  • Paul Conlon
  • Alasdair Davison
  • Anna Stronge
  • Jaynie Gwynne

Best Presentation - AquaRefract

  • Susannah Redmond
  • Mateusz Grzeszkowiak
  • Diarmuid Grimley
  • Christian Beaumont

Feedback was wonderfully positive, with many students enjoying the range of activities as well as the practical hands-on activities. Bolstered by this, the school is planning to run the programme again in 2025, with an aim to expand to 5 days, run additional activities and expand reach to more schools across Northern Ireland.

Thanks to all the fantastic staff who helped bring this programme together, as well as the teachers and school administrators who ensured our visiting students were ready for their work experience.
