Prof Cóilín Parsons (Georgetown University): ‘Is there a global Irish literature?

Cóilín Parsons is Associate Professor in the Department of English and Director of the Global Irish Studies Initiative at Georgetown University. His research interests include Irish literature, global modernisms, space and scale, and postcolonial literature and theory. His first book, The Ordnance Survey and Modern Irish Literature (Oxford UP, 2016) was awarded the ACIS Robert Rhodes Prize for Books on Literature, and was shortlisted for the Modernist Studies Association Prize for a First Book. An edited volume, Relocations: Reading Culture in South Africa (co-edited with Imraan Coovadia and Alexandra Dodd), was published by the University of Cape Town Press in 2015, and another edited volume, Science, Technology, and Irish Modernism (co-edited with Kathryn Conrad and Julie McCormick Weng), was published by Syracuse University Press in 2019. A second monograph project, "Telescopic Modernism: The Novel and the Planet," looks at how modernist writers from the anglophone world engage with the discourse and insights of astronomy in their attempts to figure the planet. And an edited volume is under contract with Cambridge University Press on Irish literature in transnational and global perspective.
