Student Experience

Your journey starts here

Embarking on a degree is an exciting journey full of new experiences, challenges and adventures.  We support and encourage our students to take advantage all the opportunities and events run by the school and to engage with the research culture in HAPP. Students at all levels are a central part of our school community. The school supports student-led initiatives, enabling students to organise events, take part in national and international student conferences and attend events such as Model NATO. We encourage students to take up the many opportunities available to study abroad at other leading universities. Our students enrich the life of the school and the wider university.

Teaching and Research Excellence

From week one at Queen’s you will be taught or supervised by world-leading experts teaching in their research fields.  As a Russell Group university we are committed to maintaining the very best research, providing an outstanding teaching and learning experience and close links with business and the public sector. Explore our History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics pages for more details of degree programmes.

Skills and Employability

Our skills modules throughout HAPP focus on developing research techniques, ethics skills and critical thinking about society, all transferable skills to highlight on your CV for employment.

Internships and Placements

We offer exciting internships and placements in a range of organisations such as the BBC, Museums, NGO's and voluntary organisations.

Erasmus and Study Abroad

Our active exchange agreements with a wide range of Universities provide opportunities for students to come to HAPP to study and for our current students to study abroad. We also welcome students from across the world from our partner institutions.

International Summer Schools

The International Summer School in Irish Studies will examine the history and influence of our island on the world and uses this to gain a greater perspective on the planet we share.  We also contribute to the Summer School on Conflict Transformation and Social Justice which examines the theories and practices of conflict transformation from within local and global perspectives.

PhD Research Culture

PhD students are an integral part of the School, working closely with our academic staff to push the boundaries of knowledge in the development of their research projects. Our PhD students are active in our research centres and we offer them opportunities to develop transferable skills, to gain experience of teaching and gain recognition from the Higher Education Authority. We support them in their professional aspirations.  We have several student-led seminar series and we assist students to attend local and international workshops and conferences.
