Welcome to Philosophy at Queen's, the focal point of philosophy research and teaching in Northern Ireland. We are a tight-knit group of world class philosophers whose research ranked 9th among all UK philosophy departments for research intensity in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.
We offer a broad range of undergraduate programmes, both single and joint, and pride ourselves on both the quality of our teaching and the innovative approach we bring to our subject. In addition to studying core areas of philosophy our students have the opportunity to explore its wider applications, such as on our distinctive philosophy for children module.
All our staff are available to supervise PhDs, providing expert supervision on topics ranging from ancient scepticism to hate speech. Our research students are fully integrated into the dynamic research culture of the School, including opportunities to collaborate with researchers in other disciplines where that is appropriate.
"Philosophy at Queen’s aims to bridge the theoretical and practical, delving deep into, and questioning, the fundamental theories underpinning our views about ourselves and the world in which we live, and reflecting on how doing so can help us respond to the challenges we face today. In both our teaching and research our aim is to carefully question received ideas, doing so in a way that is both generous and supportive." Dr Tom Walker

Having the opportunity to study with lecturers who are not only respected in their field but also enthusiastic about teaching really does make for a fantastic and rewarding experience. The whole faculty has a unique atmosphere where both students and staff have a genuine passion for the subject which makes for a great university experience. If you’re on the fence at all bite the bullet and go for it! Craig Henderson
