Professor Wil Verhoeven, 1958-2024

The School is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Wil Verhoeven, who died on 11th October 2024 after a short illness.

Professor Verhoeven began his time at Queen's as Head of Arts, English and Languages (2017-20), before joining our School as Professor of American Studies. Previous to that, Wil was Professor of American Culture and Cultural Theory, and the founding Chair of the American Studies Department at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands).

Wil's research on the Age of Revolution and Enlightenment in the Atlantic world was highly respected for marrying a deep understanding of the historical archives with cultural theory and ideas. His award-winning publications, admired for their clarity and richness of expression, included Americomania and the French Revolution Debate in Britain, 1789-1802, published by Cambridge University Press in 2013 and Gilbert Imlay: Citizen of the World (Routledge, 2008).

Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife, Amanda, and all his family.

Donations can be made to the charity Brainwaves NI in Wil’s memory.
