Fulbright Scholarship in Conflict, Security and Contested Pasts
The Fulbright-Queen’s University Belfast Award in 'Conflict, Security and Contested Pasts' covers a taught master’s degree in the school of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics at the university. Our location in Northern Ireland (itself a post-conflict society) provides a unique environment in which to study MA programmes relating to the award theme of ‘Conflict, Security and Contested Pasts’.

J.C. Beckett Bursary
The J.C. Beckett bursary was established in 2000 in memory of Professor J.C. Beckett who served the University with great distinction as a scholar, teaching and its first Professor of Irish History from 1958 to 1975.
The bursary is equivalent to the current cost of home fees (£7,700 for 2026-7 entry) for a student enrolled on the MA in History or MA in Public History, and specialising in Irish history.
The bursary is awarded on the recommendation of the Head of School and MA History convenor. To apply, please submit a 750-800 word statement, a short CV (max. two pages), and a transcript of your UG degree results. The statement should indicate your academic achievements during your undergraduate degree, why you wish to study Irish history on the MA History or MA Public History at Queen’s University Belfast, and your intention to undertake a dissertation in an Irish history topic.
Applications should be sent by email to: HAPPscholarships@qub.ac.uk by the deadline of 5pm (GMT) on 3rd August 2026. Please include ‘Beckett Bursary’ in the email subject line. The outcome will be communicated to applicants by 21st August 2026.
The funds will be awarded in late November 2026 and is contingent upon completion of full-time enrolment on the MA History or MA Public History programme and confirmation of a MA dissertation topic related to Irish history.
- Mary A. Gardiner Scholarship
This scholarship was founded in 1965 under the will of Mrs Annette Winnard Gardiner, in memory of Mary A. Gardiner, a Master of Arts of the University.
The scholarship shall be awarded on the recommendation of the Head of the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy & Politics, to assist postgraduate study, preferably in Classics, Ancient History, or Byzantine Studies.
It is tenable along with any other scholarship, studentship or award whose regulations so permit. It may be awarded:
EITHER To a student of this University who is about to graduate and wishes to embark on research, either full-time or part-time, for assistance in travel or for any other approved purpose; OR To a graduate of this University who is already engaged in research, either full-time or part time, for assistance in travel or for any other approved purpose; OR To a graduate of another university engaged in research, either full-time or part-time, for the purpose of visiting this University in connection with that research. In recommending the award, the Head of School will take into account the merits of the candidate and the purpose of the application.
The Scholarship will be awarded by the Academic Council on the recommendation of the Head of School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy & Politics. Applications should be addressed in the first instance to the Head of School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy & Politics.
Holders of the scholarship may apply for its renewal for a further year, up to a maximum of three years in all, but such applications for renewal will be considered in competition with any other applications for the scholarship.
- Peel Prize
The Peel Prizes were founded in 1861 by Sir Robert Peel, and are awarded for excellence in historical and philosophical studies. Two prizes, of £1,200 each, are offered annually. One prize will be awarded to a student enrolling on a full-time basis for an MA in History at QUB, and one prize to a student enrolling on a full-time basis for an MA in Philosophy at QUB. The prizes are awarded on the basis of outstanding performance in their primary degree.
This prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Head of School. To apply, please submit a 600-750 word statement, a short CV (max. two pages) and a transcript of your UG degree results. The statement should highlight your academic achievements and also why you wish to study on either the MA History or MA Philosophy at Queen’s University Belfast.

- Robinson Award
The Robinson Award was established in 2025 by David Robinson, to support MA students at Queen’s in the study of early modern history.
The award, to value of £2,000, will be granted on the recommendation of the Head of School. To apply, please submit a 600-750 word statement, a short CV (max. two pages), and a transcript of your UG degree results. The statement should highlight your academic achievements during your undergraduate degree, why you wish to study early modern history on the MA programme, and your intention to undertake a dissertation in an early modern history topic on the MA History or Public History at Queen’s University Belfast.

The Patrick Devine Bursary
This bursary of $10,000 (£8,000) will be awarded to a student accepted onto the MA in Conflict Transformation and Social Justice at Queen's University Belfast.
The bursary is open to any student who has secured a place in this MA Programme. An application will be submitted to the Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice. It will require the provision of a CV of no more than two pages, with two references, confirmation of acceptance onto the MA Programme and a official transcript of UG marks

McNeill Scholarship
The Mary McNeill scholarship, to the value of £1,500, is open to US or Canadian citizens enrolled as full-time overseas students on the MA in Irish Studies at QUB.
The scholarship is awarded by a panel from the Institute of Irish Studies, chaired by the Director of Irish Studies. To apply, please submit a 600-750 word statement, a short CV (max. two pages) and a transcript of your primary degree results. The statement should highlight your academic achievements during your primary degree and why you wish to study on the MA Irish Studies at Queen’s University Belfast.
