The DfE studentships cover full tuition fees and a generous three-year living stipend. Funding is primarily available to UK and ROI nationals, as well as EU nationals with settled status. Up to 30% of awards may be allocated to international applicants, who will receive a stipend and full tuition fee coverage. All applicants must meet the academic entry requirements.
Available PhD Projects include:
This project investigates how job quality shapes wellbeing across the island of Ireland. Using the Working in Ireland Survey 2 (WIIS 2), the research will identify a priority sector for in-depth study, followed by comparative case research with employers, employees, and policymakers. This work will generate practical, evidence-based recommendations to advance good quality jobs, policymaking, and societal wellbeing.
This project will produce the first ever estimates of Northern Ireland’s capital stock, using methodologies applied by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and OECD. By constructing a robust capital dataset and enabling multi-factor productivity analysis, the research fills a long-standing evidence gap. Findings will provide policymakers with powerful tools to design effective productivity enhancing strategies, strengthening the region’s economic competitiveness.
Drawing on a rich new administrative dataset, this PhD will deepen understanding of wage gaps, inequality, job mobility, and zero-hours contract employment in Northern Ireland, with comparisons across time and other UK regions. Insights from this work will support more equitable labour market policies and better-informed decision-making across the public and private sectors.
