Undergraduate: Rory Brolly Attends UCSC Global Entrepreneurship Programme
Meet Rory Brolly, a BSc Business Economics who completed the University of California Santa Cruz Global Entrepreneurship Programme.

What made the UCSC Global Entrepreneurship Programme such a transformative experience for you?
My time in California was eye-opening in every sense. Immersed in the heart of Silicon Valley, I was surrounded by innovation, natural beauty, and a culture that thrives on curiosity and collaboration. The programme didn’t just teach me about entrepreneurship—it reshaped how I view my academic studies, my career path, and my own potential.
Was there a standout moment during the programme that really inspired you?
Absolutely—the visit to Google’s campus was unforgettable. Walking through such an iconic space was surreal, but what truly made it impactful was speaking with Jeremy Neuner. His insights went beyond motivation; he offered practical advice and a roadmap for pursuing entrepreneurial goals. That conversation turned a simple tour into a pivotal learning moment.
How did the culture of Silicon Valley differ from your expectations?
I expected a cutthroat environment, but what I found was a deeply collaborative and open culture. People were genuinely interested in our ideas and eager to help. The emphasis on failing fast and failing forward was liberating—it shifted my mindset and helped me overcome self-doubt. I learned that being taken seriously isn’t about experience, but about passion and willingness to learn.
What was the biggest challenge you faced, and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge was internal—overcoming imposter syndrome and building confidence in my ideas. The supportive ecosystem and constant encouragement helped me step out of my comfort zone. I realised that failure isn’t something to fear, but a necessary part of growth and innovation.
How did the programme connect academic theory with real-world application?
The hands-on approach was a game-changer. Concepts like the Lean Start-up methodology became tools we used daily. We learned to pivot based on feedback, refined our Business Model Canvas, and practiced pitching to real investors. It made my academic learning feel relevant and powerful.
What impact has the programme had on your future plans?
It accelerated my entrepreneurial ambitions. I used to think starting a business was something for later in life, but now I’m actively working on a start-up with my co-founder. I plan to use my upcoming year abroad in America to scale our venture. The programme gave me clarity, confidence, and a competitive edge—not just on paper, but in mindset.
