Heaney at Queen's: Collection Highlights for Culture Night Belfast

Back to events

The Seamus Heaney Centre Collections welcome a portrait of Seamus Heaney by Colin Davidson for a limited period. On Culture Night we are honoured to display this deeply personal piece in public for the first time.

Date(s)
September 19, 2025
Location
Seamus Heaney Centre
Time
16:00 - 19:00
Price
Free

Heaney’s writing has long influenced artists working in all disciplines. During lockdown, painter Colin Davidson sought solace in Heaney’s poetry, and returned to the sketches he had made towards his portrait of Heaney in 2013, now held in the Ulster Museum Art Collection. As a result, Davidson painted a new portrait of Heaney, the subject’s gaze directly engaging with the viewer this time, which was acquired by friends of the artist. The owners of the portrait, together with Colin have generously loaned it to the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s for a limited period, where it will also be treasured as a symbol of friendship.

The permanent exhibition will also be open late to mark the occasion.
