Research
QML hosts an interdisciplinary team of biologists, modellers and engineers, pursuing applied research in marine resources and blue-skies research in organismal biology including anatomy, phylogenetics, and ecosystem dynamics.
Sustainable Resources
- Coastal engineering, wave energy, and its environmental impacts
- Research into local seaweed species, in particular Algal Biofuels as part of the EU Interreg-funded EnAlgae project and BBSRC and EPSRC funded Seagas project
- Biology of commercially-exploited 'shellfish' species (molluscs, crustaceans) including the EU-funded IBIS project and work on Age Determination in Crustaceans
Evolutionary Ecology and Systematics
- Physiology and metabolism of marine invertebrates
- Morphology, and anatomical visualisation via tomographic modelling
Biodiversity and Ecosystem Function
- Pelagic, benthic, and rocky shore ecology
- Invasion dynamics of alien species (in partnership with Invasive Species Ireland)
- Control of Invasive Species (including both freshwater and terrestrial species)
- Restoration of Modiolus modiolus biogenic reefs with the N Ireland Marine Division
