EEECS and CSIT support the CyberFirst Empower Girls Event

29 April, 2025

EEECS and CSIT supported the fantastic CyberFirst Empower girls event in Belfast, held in the Waterfront ICC on 29 April.

Promotional graphic for the 'Empower Girls' event held on 29 April 2025 at ICC Belfast. The design includes pop-up style windows with phrases like 'Proudly Sponsoring' and 'Empower Girls'. Text describes the event as a unique opportunity for 600 Year 8 female students to explore cyber security and technology. The CyberFirst logo appears in the top right corner.

This event was designed to showcase the many cyber security and tech careers that are available in Belfast.  The event aims to increase diversity in tech, where currently women represent only 23% of the tech industry in Northern Ireland.

Exhibition booth setup for Queen’s University Belfast at an event. Four vertical banners display themes from the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science: 'Electrical and Electronic Engineering', 'Computer Science', 'Cyber-AI Hub', and 'Securing Complex Systems'. A red tablecloth with the Queen’s University Belfast logo covers the display table.

Over 600 Year 8 girls (ages 11-12) participated on the day from 22 different schools across Northern Ireland, alongside 50 companies and many volunteers. We brought along some of our wonderful VR and AR demos, including the exciting cyber security training demo developed by the QUB ACE CSE team, to allow the pupils to try out VR and best practice cyber security awareness training.  Our fantastic volunteers were kept busy with keen pupils trying out the headsets, playing AR games with Dr Matthew Collins, and kindly supported by QUB student recruitment and CSIT staff, who provided merchandise for pupils.

Adrianne Thompson, an EEECS PhD student, hosted an inspiring demo session to the pupils on device privacy, supported by Helen Lappin in CSIT, encouraging the girls to be aware of what information devices consume.

Presentation slide titled 'What's My Device Saying About Me?' featuring an illustration of a woman checking a smartwatch. The talk is by Adrianne Thompson, supervised by Domhnall Carlin, Kieran McLaughlin, and Leonie Tanczer (UCL), and is affiliated with the Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT). The slide is part of the CyberFirst Empower Girls 2025 event

The event was great fun and a busy day, working to inspire the next generation of women in tech and cyber security. A big thank you to all involved on the day!
