Research Interests
I welcome PhD applications from students in Asian, imperial, transnational or world history. Through the Robert Hart Project, we have a particular concentration of research into Sino-Western relations. I am also keen to work with students around public history, digital methods or innovative methodologies.
I am open to PhD applications in the fields of:
- Sino-Western relations and trade
- Imperial and transnational history
- Photography in Asia
- Ireland and empire

- AHRC-Smithsonian Fellow in Digital Scholarship (2019)
- Digitisation of the Sir Robert Hart Diaries and photograph collection (ongoing)
- NLHF project “Sir Robert Hart: Between Two Worlds”
- Partnerships with museums including the Freer|Sackler (Washington DC) and the National Army Museum (London)
