GENDER, CULTURE, EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

Equality and Diversity

We are committed to ensuring the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics (HAPP) is a positive and affirming place to study and work. We support equality for all irrespective of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, or religious faith.  We do not tolerate harassment or discrimination.

Athena SWAN Bronze Award logo
ATHENA SWAN
BRONZE AWARD

We currently hold an Athena SWAN Bronze award and have an active SWAN committee, from post-doctoral researchers to professors, and students from undergraduate level through to PhD. The SWAN Committee and our SWAN Champions work to improve the inclusive culture of the school and to implement the diverse actions on our SWAN Action Plan.

Athena SWAN Gender Equality Committee

Athena SWAN promotes gender equality in representation, career progression and the work environment.  The School and its Athena SWAN Gender Equality Committee actively work to ensure students feel supported within HAPP, through regular research and social events, the Personal Tutor System, Peer Mentoring, the Staff Student Consultative Committee, and the SWAN Student Forum.  The School has a SWAN Charter and guides on harassment for students and staff that feed into the university policies.  All guides are available on the student and staff SharePoint sites.

For assistance or advice, staff or students can speak in confidence to SWAN Co-Champion Dr Elodie Fabre, or SWAN Co-Champion  Professor Sinead O'Sullivan or the Head of School Professor James Davis.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee

The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committee is concerned with all issues of inclusion, diversity and equality within the School of HAPP, and works in conjunction with the Athena Swan Gender Equality Committee. The aim is to promote values of inclusivity, through communication, the organisation of events, activities connected to community-building, policy and curriculum development efforts. The aim is also to promote an organisational culture that is respectful and inclusive of all, irrespective of age, disability ethnicity, race, religion/belief, gender, sex, or sexual orientation, caring responsibilities, and more.

Race Equality Charter
Improving the representation, progression and success of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students within HE

Building on the experience, methodology and framework of the Athena SWAN Charter, Advance HE launched the Race Equality Charter (REC) in January 2016. The history of the Charter can be found here. REC provides Universities with the framework to identify and critically reflect on institutional and cultural barriers standing in the way of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students.

Race Equality Charter (REC)

Queen’s University Belfast signed up to the Advance HE Race Equality Charter (REC) in 2020 and we are proud to be one of more than eighty members of REC.

The Charter covers: academic staff; professional services staff; student progression and attainment; diversity in the curriculum.

In October 2020 the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ian Greer, committed Queen’s to take ‘rigorous institutional action’ in "ensuring diversity" as well as BAME staff and student progression. Moreover, Queen’s has recently applied for a Race Equality Charter Award, the fundamental principle of which is that the  "UK higher education cannot reach its full potential unless it can benefit from the talents of the whole population and until individuals from all ethnic backgrounds can benefit equally from the opportunities it affords".

The School of HAPP at Queen’s takes seriously these commitments. In the last few years, we have a designed a compulsory “History of Black Lives Matters Course” for our history undergraduates. We also have led active bystander training sessions where we work with students based in HAPP to make the campus an anti-racist and anti-sexist environment. This is an ongoing process.

If students are facing or witnessing any sexism or racism at Queen’s please get in touch with Dr Elodie Fabre (e.fabre@qub.ac.uk), Professor Sinéad O’Sullivan (s.osullivan@qub.ac.uk) (HAPP's Gender Equality SWAN Lead Champions), or Dr Ashok Malhotra (A.Malhotra@qub.ac.uk)  (HAPP's  Race Equality Champion).
