Intercalated Degrees

The intercalated degree programme is specifically designed for medical or dental students wishing to extend their experience and qualifications by taking a year out of their studies to work towards a Bachelor of Science degree, Masters degree or PhD in a specific subject area.
The closing date for Masters applications is Monday 23 March 2026. Late applications will be considered if places are available. The closing date for BSc applicants wishing to be considered for funding is Friday 30 January 2026. The closing date for remaining BSc applications is Friday 24 April 2026. QUB Medical students should complete a permission to intercalate form no later than 30 January 2026, 4pm.
An intercalated degree provides a unique exposure to modern science. This degree, undertaken during medical or dental training, involves an extra year of study at the end of second, third or fourth year giving students the opportunity to explore in depth an area of particular interest whilst working towards a Bachelor of Science, Masters degree or PhD. Appropriate training is provided in research methods and an opportunity is provided to work with experts in the field. Students can also enhance transferable skills such as researching literature and critical scientific thinking.
The focus of intercalated degrees is largely on research, providing valuable training and creating opportunities to publish work and attend scientific meetings. There is a strong research ethos within the School centered on four multidisciplinary centres of excellence: The Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research; WellcomeWolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine; Centre for Public Health; Centre for Medical Education.

The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences also welcome applications for intercalated PhDs. For further information on intercalating on a PhD contact the Postgraduate and Professional Development Office in SMDBS.
