Where Writing Lives...

800 x 450 Reading Room

SHC New Building Mount Charles 800 x 450
A New Home for Creative Writing at Queen's
Heaney Centre Podcast Recording 800 x 450
Recording the SHC Podcast

With over twice the internal area of the existing building, the new Centre is to be a worldleading facility, dedicated to excellence in creative writing: a creative hub and inspiring space for teaching, writing, reading, for workshops, masterclasses and performances. The new location will allow the Centre to host an expanding programme of summer schools and creative writing weeks, as well as accommodate the increasing numbers of visitors interested in Seamus Heaney, in poetry, and in writing from Northern Ireland.

Our vision is to celebrate and symbolise the legacy of Seamus Heaney, produce world class writing and research, and nurture and inspire future generations of new writers.

The International Poetry Series

This virtual series included Sharon Olds, Terrance Hayes, Anne Carson and Billy Collins. Watch the discussions here...

Masterclasses in Storytelling

We recently met with the actor Dominic West to discuss his career, the stories he tells, and how he tells them.

SHC Presents...

Our regular series of events showcases work by staff and students in a themed cabaret-style evening.

Ekphrasis: Writing & Art

A collaborative project with the Ulster Museum explores and celebrates the connection between art and writing. Our latest pamphlet is coming soon!

The Friday Critique

A counter to the slow, often staid culture of literary criticism, our students publish short-form reviews of new writing every week.
