Playback: Joint Public Health Conference 2020

Joint Public Health Conference 2020

If you missed the all-island Joint Public Health Conference 2020, you can now playback all the sessions and listen to the keynote speakers.

The conference, which took place virtually on November 17th, 2020, focused on Picking Up the Pieces – Public Health and COVID-19.

It brought together leading international experts to discuss how COVID-19 has affected our lives, with a focus on how the pandemic has impacted inequalities. It also highlighted the latest policy, data and research on how the pandemic has impacted public health on the island of Ireland.

The conference was jointly organised by the Institute of Public Health, the Public Health Agency, Queen’s University Belfast, and Ulster University.

It will be relevant to stakeholders with responsibility for public health and the COVID-19 response in Ireland and Northern Ireland; health professionals; policymakers; national and local government; Healthy Ireland and Making Life Better networks; the community and voluntary sector; and the research and academic community.

Ministerial Address & Morning Keynote by Prof Sharon Friel

Ministers for Health in Ireland and Northern Ireland, Stephen Donnelly TD and Robin Swann MLA, opened the conference with a Ministerial welcome.

Prof Sharon Friel is Professor of Health Equity and Director of the Menzies Centre for Health Governance at the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet), Australian National University. She has been voted one of the world’s most influential female leaders in global health. Prof Friel’s keynote addressed Post COVID-19 and the opportunities for health equity.

Afternoon keynote by Prof Susan Michie

Prof Susan Michie serves as an expert advisor on the UK’s Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Behavioural Science (Covid-19) and is a consultant advisor to the World Health Organisation on Covid-19 and behaviour. She is also expert advisor to Public Health England and the UK Department of Health and Social Care and is Chair of the UK Food Standard Agency’s Social Sciences Advisory Committee.

Prof Michie’s keynote focused on COVID-19 and intervening using behavioural science.
