Since October 1st, 2017, Nikolaos (Nikos) Athanasopoulos is a Lecturer in the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Nikos obtained his Engineering degree and PhD  in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Patras, Greece, in 2004 and 2010 respectively. During 2006-2010 he was a Greek State Scholarships Fellow in Robotics and Automatic Control. He was also an EU Marie Curie Fellow at Eindhoven University of Technology (2011-2014), and a postdoctoral research fellow, funded by the Belgian government, at the ICTEAM institute in University of Louvain (Université catholique de Louvain, 2015-2017).

His research interests span the areas of systems theory, optimisation and control. In specific, he is interested in:
- Cyber-physical systems, with a focus on the control challenges arising in Digital Manufacturing (or Industry 4.0), energy conversion and distribution and networked control systems.

- Algorithmic tools for analysis and control of complex systems, often consisting of heterogeneous components (physical, hardware or software) that can abruptly change their structure. The focus is in proving correct behaviors and designing control strategies that guarantee satisfaction of complex specifications such as safety, robustness and a level of optimality.

- Switching and hybrid systems, reachability analysis and invariance, algebraic methods and stability theory.
