Engaging new software technologies and processes on site to facilitate the implementation of BIM models

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project aims to work with the company to fully exploit BIM at site level to drive efficiencies, reduce waste in terms of material deliveries, reduce (or eliminate) re work, enhance project planning and resource allocation, and improve estimation and measurement capability. This efficiency is benchmarked against similar projects not using BIM technology. The site efficiencies gained are being measured and documented as the project progresses.

This project has used a number of key technologies – laser scanning, drones, photogrammetry  - and integrated them into the site processes and the project BIM model. Processes which, at the start, were pilot programmes implemented on 1 or 2 construction sites have now been integrated into the business and implemented on all sites.

Impact of Research

As part of this KTP, the associate has completed a BIM Project Management Master’s Degree and become a fully licensed drone pilot. The skills and techniques that have been developed now place the company at the cutting edge of BIM and digital exploitation on site, giving the company a base of digital skill that few of its competitors possess.

Since completing his MSc, the associate has given well received lectures to BIM MSc students on drone use in construction, and on the use of Dalux AR / Common Data Environment in construction.

The associate and supervisor (first author and co-author respectively) have written a chapter on Drones in Construction for a book called “3D imaging handbook”

LEAD PROJECT INVESTIGATOR

Tara Brooks studied architecture at Liverpool University and the Bartlett and qualified as an architect in 2000, working in London, York and Belfast for 10 years before specialising in project management. She worked in bid management, procurement and project planning for several construction contractors for 8 years before becoming a full time academic. She enjoys continued connection to industry through a number of active KTPs. Her areas of research include digital construction, procurement, and quality management and its effectiveness in practice.
