Environmentally friendly travel opportunities
For staff, students and visitors to the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, there are a wide range of potential travel options including bus, train and bike options.
The University is well serviced by a range of public transport options, in particular the Metro bus services on routes 7, 8 and 9. Up to date timetabling information for each of these routes can be found at the Translink Journey planner (http://www.translink.co.uk/), with a range of fare options available for single or multi-users (http://www.translink.co.uk/Services/Metro-Service-Page/Fares/).
There are two train stations within walking distance of the University – City Hospital and Botanic Avenue. Information on services can be found at http://www.translink.co.uk/Services/NI-Railways/
The Belfast Bikes scheme (https://www.belfastbikes.co.uk/en/belfast/) has 45 docking stations across Belfast, providing low cost and convenient travel across the City. With bike stations at University Road and Botanic Gardens, this provides a convenient and flexible way to both visit Queen’s and see the rest of the local area by bike.
QUB has a number of incentives to encourage staff to cycle to work more details of which may be found by clicking here
There is a cycle mileage allowance for travelling by cycle on QUB business and the University provides a range of facilities including bike stands located across the University and secure cycle parking accessible by means of a PIN code supplied by the Travel Plan Co-ordinator upon receipt of a £10 annual fee. Closest secure parking to the Ashby is adjacent to the Laboratory Block and staff requesting access to secure cycle parking should email their request to transport@qub.ac.uk
The University also provides shower and locker facilities, details of which may be found here
Anyone considering buying a bike may wish to consider "Cycle+", the University's cycle to work scheme which offers staff the opportunity to obtain a bicycle and safety equipment for less than normal cost.
By applying to the scheme, staff can have the use of a new bicycle and safety equipment, up to a value of £1,000.
All the information needed to join the new scheme can be found by clicking here
Staff travelling into work in their own cars is one of the institution's environmental impacts and those that routinely travel to work by car might be interested in the QUB Car-sharing Scheme and the Guaranteed Lift Home (GLH) Scheme which guarantees staff, who formally car-share, a return journey home should the car driver let them down in the event of an unforeseen problem.
Full details of both of these are available here
Anyone commuting by bus might be interested in "Travel+" the University bus travel salary sacrifice scheme, which offers staff the opportunity to obtain an annual bus ticket for less than normal cost. Click here to find all the information needed to join the scheme through which staff can purchase an annual bus ticket to the value of £2,500.
