Pharmaceutical Materials Science and Formulation

Research in this theme is focused on the design, development and industrial translation of novel systems for patient-focused administration of difficult-to-deliver drugs. Activities are concentrated on the development of formulations to address major global issues around sexual and reproductive health, use of hot melt granulation and polymer extrusion/injection moulding technologies to produce solid dosage forms, multi-layered and targeted drug delivery systems, the use microneedles for transdermal drug delivery, patient monitoring and vaccine delivery, implantable delivery systems and ocular therapeutics.

Research Equipment Includes:

Copley DIS 8000 Dissolution Tester, Copley

Dissolution Testing

Copley DIS 8000 Dissolution Tester, Copley

Function: Drug release and in-vitro dissolution behaviour determination.

DVS Advantage Surface Measurement System

School of Pharmacy (Lab M106)

Bookable only after suitable training and COSHH form.

TA Instruments DSC Q20 and TA Instruments DSC Q100

Differential scanning calorimeter

TA Instruments DSC Q20 and TA Instruments DSC Q100

-55 oC to 300 oC. For higher temperatures seek guidance. Both calorimeters have modulated temperature facility. The Q100 allows improved calibration for sensitive heat capacity measurements.

School of Pharmacy (Lab M106)

Bookable only after suitable training and COSHH form. Users are responsible for their own calibration and must supply their own accessories as required.

Vivosight Topical OCT System (Handheld Medical Imaging Device)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Vivosight Topical OCT System (Handheld Medical Imaging Device)

The VivoSight uses eye-safe infrared laser light to create detailed, 6 mm by 6 mm images of tissues, up to 2 mm below the surface of the skin. The images are created from the pattern of light reflections from structures in the skin.

Offers field of view and depth of penetration scans providing real-time, high-definition images of the sub-surface of the skin.

School of Pharmacy 02 014 (Microscope Room)

Bookable only after suitable training

Vivosight OCT High Speed Scanning Laser Microscope (Stationary)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Vivosight OCT High Speed Scanning Laser Microscope (Stationary)

Similar to the Vivosight Topical OCT System (Handheld Medical Imaging Device) but in stationary mode.

The VivoSight uses eye-safe infrared laser light to create detailed, 6 mm by 6 mm images of tissues, up to 2 mm below the surface of the skin. The images are created from the pattern of light reflections from structures in the skin.

Offers field of view and depth of penetration scans providing real-time, high-definition images of the sub-surface of skin or synthetic alternatives.

School of Pharmacy 01 006 (Pharmaceutical Technology Lab)

Bookable only after suitable training
