Armagh Tigers Diabetes Research Scholarship for Diabetes Research

 

For the academic year 2022 – 2023, the Armagh Tigers Charitable Trust has supported the creation of the Armagh Tigers Diabetes Research Scholarship.

 

Two students at the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Biomedical Sciences MSc Experimental Medicine will benefit from a £10,000 scholarship each to undertake a research project in diabetes. The Scholarship will include the payment of a contribution towards tuition fees for one year (£5,000 per student), as well as an additional bursary of £5,000 to each student to support accommodation, study materials, subsistence, and travel expenses.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible to the Armagh Tigers Diabetes Research Scholarship students must:

-Be resident in Northern Ireland

-Have been accepted onto the Queen’s School of Medicine, Dentistry & Biomedical Sciences MSc Experimental Medicine

-Undertake a research project in Diabetes as part of their MSc Experimental Medicine

 

Selection process

  1. The Students will submit an application for the scholarship including:

- Proof of residence in Northern Ireland

-Cover letter explaining their motivation to undertake diabetes research, as well as how they see the MSc in Experimental Medicine contributing to their career goals.

-CV and transcripts

- If relevant, proof of widening participation eligibility (e.g. disadvantaged background, care leavers, low-income households)

 

  1. The deadline for applications is August 26th, 2022

  1. Students will be invited to an interview with the assessment panel (estimated by the week commencing September 5th
  2. Student profiles will be assessed based on the application and interview. Assessment criteria will be:

-Academic performance

-Motivation to undertake a diabetes-related research project in the MSc in Experimental Medicine

-Widening participation background

  1. Applicants will be ranked according to their merits based on the above assessment criteria. An offer will be made to the highest ranked applicants in the first instance and in order of ranking, thereafter, should the scholarship be turned down. If no suitable candidates are identified in the 2022/23 year, then the Scholarships will be awarded in academic year 2023-2024.
  2. The studentship will contribute to l fees for one year (currently £5000 for a student from Northern Ireland) plus a bursary of £5000 to be given to each student over the year of study September 2022 – 2023. Conditions on the payment will be detailed to the awardees in the offer letter.

Should a student withdraw from the course during their first year, they may be required to repay a partial amount of the bursary.

  1. Successful candidates are required to provide a final report on their research to the donor.
