  • Basic research on advanced materials: materials science, theoretical materials sciences, analytical science, characterisation and imaging including spectroscopy, mechanical and thermal analysis, computational modelling
  • Applied research in advanced materials: experimental approaches, characterisation, digitalisation; electronics, mobility, construction
  • Applications and utilisation of advanced materials research: scale-up and engineering, advanced production technologies, modelling, safe and sustainable by design, substitution of critical raw materials; energy
  • Circular economy of advanced materials: circular design, lifecycle analysis, resources, industrial design, waste management, recyclability

Current Research Opportunities

  • Electroless high entropy alloy coatings for energy storage applications
  • Improving the shrinkage behaviour and efflorescence formation of low carbon geopolymer concrete

Public outreach & key achievements

  • Five research books (2015, 2013, 2011, 2009, 2009) and 390 research papers (1986-2025). A World’s Top 2% Scientist (Stanford-Elsevier report).
  • £3.65M external research grants (1995-2025).
  • Achieved huge student growth over the six year period (2018-24) as Dean of Postgraduates: 79% increase in PGT (120% increase in international students) and 23% increase in PGR (47% increase in international students).
  • Numerous other leadership roles including Director of Research (2014-18)
  • Research project By-products for Building Materials (EC-Horizon 2020) showcased in Ulster Museum (2016 and 2017)
