Photographs and visualisation of data are a powerful way to share the incredible mechanics of the universe and the ways that science and technology play key roles in daily life!

Queen’s University Belfast Maths and Physics department, and the Institute of Physics, would like to celebrate the curiosity of people across the island by asking them to share their STEM #Unfiltered images with us and the world!

To take part in the competition, entrants should submit:

  • an original image + (Link will be active from 1st June to 10th October 2022)
  • a short descriptive paragraph (< 250 words) explaining the amazing science it shows! Teach us about your favourite piece of science or technology.

A 1st and 2nd prize entry will be picked from each age-group (See below for details) and displayed in the online public gallery alongside other notable entries and photographs from within our department. The top-ranked entries will receive Amazon vouchers and certificates recognising their contribution.

Link for entries will be open from 1st June - 10th October 2022, with the winners announced on 1st November 2022. More details about how the entries are judged below.

More details:

Your image can focus on any aspect of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM). For example, the technology in your phone or TV, the changing colour of the autumn leaves, the incredible cranes around Belfast, your school science project - explore the world around you and share it with us!  Some examples of everyday science as well as the science happening in our QUB labs is included in our gallery to help inspire you.

In the interest of privacy, please do not submit photos of people in which they are identifiable without their explicit consent. For full privacy statement follow this link

Both the image and description (< 250 words) should be created by you and not copied from another source.

The winning entries will be chosen based on both the eye-catching nature of the image and the clarity and passion of your explanation of the STEM background behind the image.

The competition has four age group categories (Adult, Key Stage 5, Key Stage 4, Key Stages 2/3 and equivalent ROI grades) and is open to all people at these levels in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Each entrant can submit up to 5 entries showcasing their favourite STEM topics.

These images will be displayed in the online gallery together with the full name and age category of the entrant, and a selection of these will be printed for display as part of a physical exhibition.  The information provided in the entry form will be stored for 1 year.

A panel of QUB researchers will review all entries and will choose a 1st and 2nd prize for each age group category as well as notable entries. The results will be announced on 1st November 2022. Certificates will be sent to the prize winners and notable entries recognising their contributions.

Summary of prizes:

Category First Place Runner Up Notable Entry
Adult £100 £75 £50
Key Stage 5 £75 £50 £25
Key Stage 4 £50 £35 £20
