Abstract:
Since their inception at the beginning of the last century, particle accelerators have been indispensable in enabling cutting-edge discoveries, in driving advanced radiation sources, and in revolutionizing medical treatments like cancer therapy. Yet, conventional accelerator technology faces well-known challenges: high cost, large physical footprint, and significant environmental impact.
Plasma-based acceleration is now emerging as a powerful and complementary alternative. It offers compact, cost-effective systems capable of delivering radiation and particle sources with unique and highly attractive properties.
In this lecture, I will outline our work on advancing this technology and highlight novel, disruptive applications across areas of major societal and industrial relevance including radiobiology, homeland security, and materials science and characterization.
