Sir Harrie Massey Colloquia

The Sir Harrie Massey Colloquia is a distinguished lecture series hosted by the School. It honours Sir Harrie Stewart Wilson Massey FRS (1908–1983), an influential Australian mathematical physicist.
Sir Harrie Stewart Wilson Massey FRS (1908–1983), an influential Australian mathematical physicist renowned for his contributions to atomic and atmospheric physics. Massey began his academic career at Queen’s University in 1933 as an independent lecturer in Mathematical Physics before becoming the Goldsmid Professor of Applied Mathematics at University College London in 1938.
The colloquia series features leading scientists presenting on contemporary topics in physics and mathematics. These colloquia are intended to act as focal points for our own scientific and mathematical discussions and the generation of new ideas and avenues for research.
Recent speakers include:
Professor Stuart Mangles (Imperial College London) – On October 16, 2024, he delivered a lecture titled “Probing Extreme Physics with Plasma Accelerators”, discussing the potential of laser wakefield accelerators in exploring extreme electromagnetic fields, temperatures, and photon-photon interactions.
Professor Jeremy Chittenden (Imperial College London) – On May 17, 2023, he shared insights from his extensive research in high energy density physics and inertial confinement fusion.
Dr Ralph Assmann (GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research) – On February 22, 2023, he presented “EuPRAXIA – A European Accelerator Project for Innovation and Science”, focusing on advancements in plasma-based particle accelerators and their scientific applications.
The series continues to attract eminent researchers.
