Dr. Tom Field’s Star Power Rocks the PAMSOC Formal

21 March, 2024

On Tuesday 12 March the student social highlight of the year, the PAMSOC Formal, took place at the Claydon Hotel. Nearly 300 students came together and dressed up in their finest for an evening of great food, music and all things Maths and Physics.

While everyone was finishing up their dessert, Dr. Jason Greenwood kept everyone’s brain in gear with an entertaining Kahoot quiz. Could you have answered these questions correctly and quickly?

This certainly showed the students’ fierce competitive instinct with the top 5 winning prizes including a specially branded School of Mathematics and Physics water bottle.

The highlight of the night was the band ANOMALyS, fronted by lead singer Stephen Moreland and lead guitarist Louis Orr who are both Level 4 Physics students. They have just released an EP of their own music which is very impressive given they are in the final stages of their MPhys degree NI band who formed while studying physics degree to release first EP - Belfast Live. They belted out a series of rock classics all night long, but the highlight of the night was undoubtedly the star turn by lecturer, Dr. Tom Field who was given no choice but to join in. Just like Ed Sheeran making a star appearance at a Taylor Swift concert, Tom mounted the stage to play guitar and sing La Bamba and I Will Survive, binging the house down in the process.

Here are Tom and ANOMALyS in action! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Nx2t3YeApQ

Afterwards the party continued on well into the night but everyone was still fresh-faced for lectures in the morning(?). Congratulations to the PAMSOC president Cameron Shaw and the committee for putting on such a stellar event!
