Two Queen's software engineers have been singled out for a prestigious award from the Institute of Physics (IOP) for their work in discovering cosmic explosions, understanding their physics and playing leading roles in major international sky surveys

The 2025 MERAC Prize for the Early Career Researcher in Observational Astrophysics has been awarded to Dr Matt Nicholl for his work on explosive transients, compact object mergers and tidal disruption events.

Professor Mihalis Mathioudakis, Head of Centre, at the School Astrophysics Research Centre, has been awarded the 2021 Institute of Physics Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin Medal and Prize for distinguished contributions to plasma, solar or space physics.

The George Darwin Lecture is given annually by an authoritative and engaging speaker on a suitable topic in astronomy. The award is named after the astronomer Sir George Darwin, the son of Charles Darwin.
