29 May, 2025

STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowships enable committed early career researchers with clear leadership potential to establish a creative, independent research programme.

Applications are eligible from applicants working in the following areas:

  1. accelerator physics

  2. astrophysics (extragalactic)

  3. astrophysics (near universe)

  4. astrophysics (near universe solar/exoplanet)

  5. nuclear physics

  6. particle astrophysics and cosmology

  7. particle physics (experiment)

  8. particle physics (theory)

Awards last five years, with typical funding awarded in the range of £500k-£600k.

The Ernest Rutherford Fellowships are intended for early career researchers who do not yet have an academic position.

Fellowships can be held either on a full‐time or a part‐time basis by applicants wishing to combine their fellowship with caring responsibilities. A part‐time award can be held at 50% or above of full‐time equivalent. A part‐time fellow may not hold another part‐time position in conjunction with the fellowship. The period of award for fellowships held on a part‐time basis will be extended on a pro rata basis.

Applicants requiring any reasonable adjustments or deadline extensions for the internal selection process can email the team at fellowships@qub.ac.uk and we will be happy to accommodate any requests.
