Teaching Assistants

Advertisement for Teaching Assistants 2024-25

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to enable the School of Arts, English and Languages to compile a register of Teaching Assistants for academic year 2024-25. Successful applicants will fully contribute to the delivery of teaching and conduct of assessment to agreed standards.

The level of support provided will be agreed in writing between the school and the individual and will be determined by the teaching requirements of each subject area in 2024-25. Training will be provided by the School and University in September 2024 (date TBC) and attendance at this training is mandatory for all new successful applicants.

Those who have previously acted as Teaching Assistants in the School must also complete and return an application if they wish to be considered for opportunities in the academic year 2024-25. Attendance at the training day is voluntary.

Application

If you wish to be considered for the provision of teaching and assessment support for 2024-25, you should first consult the University Policy and Guidance on Teaching and Teaching Support, available here  please note the restrictions within the policy around teaching if you are currently in or entering into writing up of PhD (1.2.5).

Please then complete the Teaching Assistant application form below.  A current CV should also be sent to ael@qub.ac.uk Please put your full name in the subject line of the email.

Selection

As part of our professional obligation to current doctoral candidates, Queen’s PhD students will be given first preference. Preference will then be given to returning TAs who are current PGR students and returning Alumni. In determining suitability, the School will take into consideration, where appropriate, fulfilment of contract in the previous academic year and student module evaluations.

For shortlisting purposes, it is essential that applicants have:

  • A minimum of a 2.2 Honours degree* in a relevant discipline.
  • A PhD* (or be in the process of completing a PhD) in a relevant discipline or relevant industrial/professional/teaching experience
  • A demonstrable interest in and commitment to teaching

*or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University

It is expected that successful applicants will have excellent oral and written communication skills, and presentation skills.

Applicants currently in the first year of their PhD must have passed differentiation. Applications from all PhD students must have the support of their supervisor and input will be sought as appropriate.

Notification of Results and Engagement

Applicants will be notified of the result of their application accordingly.  This will be done as soon as is practicable following the shortlist and selection stage. We will inform you as early as possible about the teaching that is likely to be available.

Those who are not selected for teaching assistance in 2024-25 will have their application forms retained should future opportunities arise during the academic year.

Please note that we engage Teaching Assistants via QWork.  The business system supports the operating model which allow Schools and Directorates to continue to engage workers locally whilst being governed centrally. To work as a teaching assistant, you must register with QWork (q-work.co.uk) it is recommended that if you have not yet registered with QWork that you do so now.
