Migrant Women Seen and Heard
A series of short films ‘Migrant Women Seen and Heard’ was screened at SARC on January 28.
The series was developed by Una Murphy, VIEWdigital community media and co-created with migrant women, in Northern Ireland; Jessi Lively, (Dominican Republic/Northern Ireland) on women of colour working in creative industries, Nandi Jola (South Africa) on her campaign for repatriation of colonial artefacts to South Africa from museums on the island of Ireland, and film on the lack of female translators for migrant women who don't speak English, by Marisa Comeau-Kerege (USA) and Abeer Musawaei (Yemen).
Marisa Comeau-Kerege, a masters graduate in Media and Broadcast Production, is producer and Dr Georgios Varoutsos, the creative tech consultant, has a PhD from Queen’s. Senior Lecturer Frank Delaney supported the application to Future Screens NI for Una to develop the project and the screening was facilitated by Senior Lecturer Dr Gizem Melek who introduced the screening.
Niamh Campbell, a reporter with the Belfast Telegraph attended the screening.
The Future Screens NI Research and Development project is for a Proof of Concept Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to create a ‘broadcast’ channel within the existing VIEWdigital WordPress website, using an open source video platform. VIEWdigital is an independent community media social enterprise, which Una co-founded with Brian Pelan (editor) which covers social affairs.’
